Sidney Bailey Collection

The late Sidney Bailey had a passion for chelonia. He was a retired university lecturer and in the 1970s he travelled the world studying and photographing tortoises, terrapins and turtles, often in the field and with poor camera equipment. His travels took him as far as India, Asia and Australasia. He was Chairman of the South East Regional Group of the BCG in Surrey for a number of years and he ran the 'Exotic Corner' for the BCG Newsletter.

After his untimely death in October 1991, his collection of over 800 slides and photographs were left to the BCG, though unfortunately little documentation has survived. With the coming of the Internet, a selection of his photos were included in our new website as an identification guide. Although the quality of the photographs obviously does not match modern standards and many clearer photos have now become available from other sources, the archive remains as a collection of historical interest.

They have been split into 3 categories: Tortoises, Turtles and Box Turtles plus Miscellaneous
